Located downtown, the zoo is open until 7 PM, which gives your family a solid five hours to explore. Tickets are most affordable when purchased online, costing $28.75 for adults and $26.75 for kids over the age of two. The zoo features interactive exhibits, a large playground, and animal favorites like dolphins, orangutans, and elephants.
To make your visit even more enjoyable, consider catching the dolphin presentation or walking through the beautifully maintained botanical gardens. It’s a great way to get everyone outdoors and moving after your travel day.
💡 Family Travel Tip: Buy your tickets online to save time and money!

This massive five-floor facility is the largest children’s museum in the world, offering something fun for every age group. Your tickets should already be purchased, and the great news is that children under two, like Lily, get in for free. Day 3: Experience Race Day at the Indy 500 with Kids
The Ultimate Family Friendly Day at the Indy 500
Day three of your family adventure includes one of Indianapolis’s most iconic events—the Indy 500. Many families are surprised to learn that race day is actually very family friendly with the right preparation. Gates open at 6 AM, and it’s best to arrive around 8 AM to find a good spot for seating. The race officially starts at 12:45 PM and typically lasts about three and a half hours.
There’s a Kids Zone at the track that includes games, giveaways, and hands-on fun that’s designed just for little ones. Be sure to stop by Gate 1 when you arrive to pick up child safety wristbands, which can help give parents peace of mind in the busy crowds. For seating, a great place to view the race with kids is the grassy mound near Turn 4, which provides space for picnics and playtime.
To enhance the experience, bring a fully collapsible wagon, which makes it easier to carry kids, chairs, food, and drinks. You’re allowed to bring in a cooler no larger than 18 inches by 14 inches by 14 inches. Pack a picnic-style lunch with plenty of snacks and water. If you want to listen in on race commentary, rent a radio scanner at the venue—or use the free IndyCar Radio Scanner app on your phone.
Noise levels at the race can be high, so don’t forget to pack ear plugs or child-sized headphones to protect young ears. Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and umbrellas (as long as they don’t block anyone’s view) are also good to have on hand. You can even bring lawn games, like a frisbee or ball, to enjoy in the infield area before the race begins.
If you have time in the morning, consider visiting the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum before the crowds pick up. Museum tickets can be bought at the door and are separate from race admission. It’s a great way to learn more about the history of the Indy 500.
After the race, wind down with some takeout. Grab a pizza and fresh salads from the grocery store for an easy dinner back at your rental or hotel.
💡 Optional Stop: If you’re up early, consider visiting the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum before the race begins. Tickets can be purchased onsite.
